Introduction
Before we look at what the
Bible says about tithing, we need to know that everything we have belongs to
God. 100% of our income belongs to God! Everything we have is a gift from
God—our homes, cars, bank accounts, IRA’s, 401K’s, income, all of our material
possession including the cash in our pockets. If it wasn’t for God’s grace, we
wouldn’t have any of these things.
When we realize that
everything we have belongs to God and we are mere stewards of his resources, it
makes it a little easier to think about how we use the money he has entrusted
into our care. Notice I said it makes it a “little” easier, not a “lot” easier.
Even when we realize this, many people are like me; we don’t like other people
telling us what to do with our money. There is something in our sinful nature
that tells us that we’ve worked for everything we have and nobody has the right
to tell us what to do with our money, including God.
MEANING
According to Oxford advanced learners dictionary,
tithe is a tenth of the goods that something produced or the money that they
earned, that was paid as tax to support the church. Significantly, tithe means
1/10 (10%).
It’s from the law of Moses (Mosaic Law) requiring 10%
of Israelite’s first fruits because God provided the harvest, this first part
was returned to him to say thank you.
It also provided for Levitical priesthood and the
needy.
THE
FIRST TITHE
GENESIS
14: 19-20
{14:19} And he blessed him,
and said, Blessed [be] Abram
of the most high God,
possessor of heaven and earth:
{14:20} And blessed be the
most high God, which hath
delivered thine enemies into thy
hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
In the text above, Abram just returned frow war,
defeating the army of four kings, rescuing his nephew(Lot). He met a priest of
God – Melchizedek.
In gratitude, he gave 1/10 to the priest. He did that
not, not to invoke God’s blessing but to respond to the blessing.
THE TITHE INTRODUCED
AS LAW [MOSAIC LAW]
LEVITICUS
27: 30-34
And all the tithe of the land,
[whether] of the
seed of the land, [or] of the
fruit of the tree, [is] the
LORD’S: [it is] holy unto the
LORD. {27:31} And if a man
will at all redeem [ought] of
his tithes, he shall add thereto
the fifth [part] thereof.
{27:32} And concerning the tithe of
the herd, or of the flock,
[even] of whatsoever passeth under
the rod, the tenth shall be
holy unto the LORD. {27:33} He
shall not search whether it be
good or bad, neither shall he
change it: and if he change it
at all, then both it and the
change thereof shall be holy; it
shall not be redeemed.
{27:34} These [are] the
commandments, which the LORD
commanded Moses for the children of Israel in mount Sinai.
We see Moses giving the commandment as a law. Tithe is
like giving to God what he owns already. Since he owns all we have, we
shouldn’t find it difficult to give him part of what is his.
REDEEM- To
exchange sth such as shares or
vouchers for
money or goods.
And if need be you want to redeem your tithe for
money, 5% must be added. Livestock/farm produce shouldn’t be selected –
Remember Cain and Abel, Abel presented the best of the sheep to God while Cain
presented the bad ones.
JACOB’S TITHE – TITHE
IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
GENESIS
28: 13-22
{28:13} And, behold, the
LORD stood above it, and said,
I [am] the LORD God of
Abraham thy father, and the
God of Isaac: the land whereon
thou liest, to thee will I
give it, and to thy seed; {28:14}
And thy seed shall be as the
dust of the earth, and thou shalt
spread abroad to the west, and
to the east, and to the north,
and to the south: and in thee
and in thy seed shall all the
families of the earth be
blessed. {28:15} And, behold, I
[am] with thee, and will keep
thee in all [places] whither
thou goest, and will bring
thee again into this land; for I will
not leave thee, until I have
done [that] which I have spoken
to thee of.
{28:16} And Jacob awaked out
of his sleep, and he said,
Surely the LORD is in this
place; and I knew [it] not.
{28:17} And he was afraid, and
said, How dreadful [is] this
place! this is none other but
the house of God, and this [is]
the gate of heaven. {28:18}
And Jacob rose up early in the
morning, and took the stone
that he had put [for] his
pillows, and set it up [for] a
pillar, and poured oil upon the
top of it. {28:19} And he
called the name of that place
Bethel: but the name of that
city [was called] Luz at the
first. {28:20} And Jacob vowed
a vow, saying, If God will
be with me, and will keep me
in this way that I go, and will
give me bread to eat, and
raiment to put on, {28:21} So that
I come again to my father’s
house in peace; then shall the
LORD be my God: {28:22} And
this stone, which I have
set [for] a pillar, shall be
God’s house: and of all that thou
shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

And Abram said to the king of
Sodom, I have lift up mine hand
unto the LORD, the most
high God, the possessor of
heaven and earth, {14:23} That I
will not [take] from a thread
even to a shoelatchet, and that I
will not take any thing that

TITHE
IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
Most christain believe that tithe was only mentioned
in the old testament, they believed the law of tithing is limited to the old
testament.
Here are some verses in the new testament that talks
about tithe…
MATTHEW
8: 4
{8:4} And Jesus
saith unto him, See thou tell
no man; but go thy way, shew
thyself to the priest, and
offer the gift that Moses
commanded, for a testimony unto them.
Which gift did moses commanded? Its in LEVITICUS 27: 30-34 where he introduced
tithe as law.
MATTHEW
23: 23
{23:23} Woe unto you, scribes
and Pharisees, hypocrites! for
ye pay tithe of mint and anise
and cummin, and have omitted
the weightier [matters] of
the law, judgment, mercy, and
faith: these ought ye to have
done, and not to leave the other undone.
Paying
tithe doesn’t meant you are doing what God want. LUKE 18: 9-14 says {18:9} And he spake this parable unto
certain which trusted in themselves that
they were
righteous, and despised others: {18:10}
Two men went up
into the temple to pray; the one a
Pharisee, and the other a
publican. {18:11} The Pharisee stood and
prayed thus with
himself, God, I thank thee, that I am
not as other men [are,]
extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or
even as this publican.
{18:12} I fast twice in the week, I give
tithes of all that I
possess. {18:13} And the publican,
standing afar off, would
not lift up so much as [his] eyes unto
heaven, but smote
upon his breast, saying, God be merciful
to me a sinner.
{18:14} I tell you, this man went down
to his house
justified [rather] than the other: for
every one that exalteth
himself shall be abased; and he that
humbleth himself shall
be
exalted.
HEBREW
7: 1-2
{7:1} For this Melchisedec,
king of Salem, priest of the
most high God, who met Abraham
returning from the
slaughter of the kings, and
blessed him; {7:2} To whom
also Abraham gave a tenth part
of all; first being by
interpretation King of righteousness,
and after that also
King of Salem, which is, King of peace;
1
CORINTHIAN 9: 13-14
{9:13} Do ye not know that
they which minister
about holy things live [of the
things] of the temple? and
they which wait at the altar
are partakers with the altar?
{9:14} Even so hath the Lord
ordained that they which
preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

WHAT ARE THE THINGS OF THE TEMPLE?

the

your

shall
ye seek, and thither thou shalt come: {12:6} And
thither
ye shall bring your burnt offerings, and your
sacrifices,
and your tithes, and heave offerings of your hand,
and
your vows, and your freewill offerings, and the
firstlings
of your herds and of your flocks: {12:7} And there
ye
shall eat before the LORD your God, and ye shall rejoice
in all
that ye put your hand unto, ye and your households,
wherein the LORD thy God
hath blessed thee.
CHARITY
TITHE – To take care of widows, orphan etc
DEUTERONOMY 14:28-29
{14:28}
At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all
the
tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay [it] up
within
thy gates: {14:29} And the Levite, (because he hath
no
part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the
fatherless,
and the widow, which [are] within thy gates,
shall
come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the LORD
thy
God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which
thou
doest.
NB:- STILL, THEY WERE WILLING TO GIVE MORE
AND MOSES HAD TO COMMAND THEM TO STOP
EXODUS 36: 2-7
{36:2} And Moses called
Bezaleel and
Aholiab, and every wise
hearted man, in whose heart the
LORD had put wisdom, [even]
every one whose heart
stirred him up to come unto
the work to do it: {36:3} And
they received of Moses all the
offering, which the children
of Israel had brought for the
work of the service of the
sanctuary, to make it
[withal.] And they brought yet unto
him free offerings every
morning. {36:4} And all the wise
men, that wrought all the work
of the sanctuary, came every
man from his work which they
made;
{36:5} And they spake unto
Moses, saying, The people
bring much more than enough
for the service of the work,
which the LORD commanded to
make. {36:6} And Moses
gave commandment, and they
caused it to be proclaimed
throughout the camp, saying,
Let neither man nor woman
make any more work for the
offering of the sanctuary. So
the people were restrained
from bringing. {36:7} For the
stuff they had

GIVING 10% ISNT TOO MUCH
THE
PRINCIPLE OF PLENTY
PROVERBS
3: 9-10
{3:9} Honour the LORD with thy
substance, and with the
firstfruits of all thine increase:
{3:10} So shall thy barns be
filled with plenty, and thy
presses shall burst out with
new wine.
When you honour him, he will fill your barn
with plenty plus givers never lack plus the reward of giving is receiving. Why
not challenge him to know if he keeps his words?
TITHE
AND GIVING
Looking
at these two words biblically, we can understand that the Old Testament uses
tithe while the New Testament uses giving.
In
the Old Testament, its 10% but in the New Testament, you can give more than
10%, you are to give as you are able.
2CORINTHIANS
9: 6-7
{9:6} But this [I say,]
He which soweth sparingly
shall reap also sparingly; and he
which soweth bountifully shall
reap also bountifully. {9:7}
Every man according as he
purposeth in his heart, [so let
him give;] not grudgingly, or
of necessity: for God loveth a
cheerful giver.
2CORINTHIANS
8 also talks about Christian giving.
